Back Yard Bird Feeding

The ideal diet for most birds in the wild will be high in fats and proteins. Sunflower, safflower, Nyjer (thistle), and peanuts range between 20-25% protein and 30-40% fat. High quality bird feed mixes contain these seeds and nuts. Lower cost seed mixes contain just 8-12% protein and 2-4% fat. The evidence for this will be on the ground, where as much as 40% of it will be scattered and uneaten by the birds.

Types of feeders

We can help you pick the style that’s best suited to the type of birds you’d like to see. For instance, Seed Tube Feeders primarily attract smaller birds and accommodate black oil sunflower seed, sunflower hearts, safflower seed, or a nut-based mix. Thistle Tube Feeders use thistle seed or a finch mix that includes sunflower chips.  Hopper Feeders are good all-around feeders for attracting both large and small birds and can be filled with black oil sunflower seeds, sunflower hearts, safflower or a nut-based mix.

Elevated platform feeders are versatile can be filled with a quality wild bird mix as well as unshelled peanuts and dried mealworms. Peanut Bird Feeders are used by clinging birds such as woodpeckers, chickadees, and nuthatches. Suet Feeders placed near trees will attract nuthatches, chickadees and woodpeckers and can be used year-round. Upside-down suet feeders help repel starlings. Specialty bird feeders attract specific bird species like hummingbirds, orioles and bluebirds.

Water

A fresh source of water is an important feature during all seasons. Providing a bird bath will attract more birds to your yard than just a bird feeder alone. A bird bath heater or heated bird bath will keep the water ice-free. Motion created in water, by a waterfall or dripper, also attracts birds from greater distances.
